I grew up working on my Uncle Roy's 800 acre farm.
I learned very quickly about hard work and the requirements to be successful in farming for a living.
Every day it was "go feed the cows, go feed the pigs, go cut the hay, go plant the crops." We grew wheat, barley, and corn and had over a 100 head of dairy cattle.
The only thing we had plenty of back then was manure.
We never once spent a dime on anything to help with our field nutrition and we didn't have one of the fancy liquid spreaders. So basically, I'd take the bucket on the tractor, clean out the stalls and and then basically just fling chunks of manure everywhere.
As time went by, the market demanded better quality crops.
Farms down the road were producing better grains, better vegetables, and their yields were going up because - they were supplementing with fertilizers.
It was another cost for my uncle – another cost for growers everywhere – but it became the new normal.
